Dayton Memories

chuck - (20 April 2005)
i would love to see some old photos of the clubhouse 22 days. i am also looking for the "Malcom Song." I have been gone from Dayton for 20 Years. Is Steve Kirk still living?

Frank - (23 April 2005)
Uh-wanna-wah It's time for Malcolm, and his dog too! It's time for Malcom, for Malcolm, for Malcolm, for Malcolm and Clubhouse 22!

Rick - (26 April 2005)
Steve Kirk is still working but I believe that he's moved to Florida and only gets back here on occassions.

Timothy Cassidy - (17 May 2005)
Yes I do remember Malcolm and his Big white Dog DUFFY, where ever happened to them? and Dr Creep? years ago I Lived in Delphos Ohio, and I couldn't wait to watch them after school. what memoies do I have? the best times were in Oct when he use to have a Haunted House. as a fund raiser,in matter of fact. He started the haunted house tren. over the years. then everyone started doing them. Til this day I still do one to help the Boy scots, and I owe it all to Dr Creep and Malcolm.

Rick - (18 May 2005)
I think Malcolm also ended up in Florida. As far as I know he's left the entertainment business.

Duffy ended up in storage at WKEF TV and over the years has fallen apart. His head was last seen mounted over the newsroom in the rafters. Last year, some body made a new Duffy suit and wore it in a parade. We're trying to locate him (or her) as we'd love to have Duffy back with Doc on the TV show.

Creep Fan - (30 May 2005)
Who's Malcolm? I remeber watching Joe Smith as the host of Clubhouse 22 ... as well as Duffy The Dog, who never spoke and always seemed to be a bit dirty. I dressed up as Dr. Creep when my Cub Scout den was in the studio audience of the show. It was one of my first experiences with live television. Dr. Creep rules.

Rick - (31 May 2005)
Malcolm McCloud was the host who helped creat the show. When he left, Joe Smith took over as co-host with Duffy and Creep.

Chris - (12 June 2005)
Don't forget Stan the Man and Robot. :-) They were on "Clubhouse 22" too. I also remember other local kids' shows from that era. Two that come to mind are "Charlie Goodtime" and "22 Skidoo". I think that the former aired on Saturday afternoons and the latter aired on Sunday mornings. Joe Smith and a lady, whose name I can't recall, hosted "22 Skidoo". I can't remember the name of the host of "The Charlie Goodtime Hour", but I can still picture him in my mind. It was on WHIO, featured a live studio audience, and showed Hanna Barbera cartoons. You know, it's very difficult to find information about local celebrities and shows from the past. A case in point is the roster of local talk show hosts on WAVI, People Power. This was way before the days of syndicated radio shows. Someone should have collected information about the good ol' days for us nostalgia freaks on the geezer side of Generatioin X. Here's a short list of memories for you Baby Boomers and older Generation X folks. 01. Goldman's 02. Gold Circle 03. Ontario's 04. Fazio's 05. Stump's 06. Liberal's 07. Goldenrod Records 08. Warehouse Records 09. Parkmoor Chicken 10. Golden Skillet Chicken 11. Broaster's Chicken 12. Taco Inn 13. Bonanza 14. Ponderosa 15. Don Wayne 16. Gil Whitney 17. WHIO FM Easy Listening 18. WONE AM Country 19. WDJX 20. WVUD 21. Burger Chef 22. Rax Roast Beef 32. Roy Rogers' Roast Beef 24. Saxon's Roast Beef

I better stop before I decide to type a thousand. ;-) I really think that I could. Feel free to add to the list.

Pam - (24 June 2005)
How about the Art Theater and the record store next to it? The Lemon Tree? And Rink's was the discount store on Woodman before Gold Circle came in...Red Barn...and there was a great head shop in the basement of a building downtown Dayton...

Found this site searching for Malcolm McLeod and wondering what happened to him. We watched Uncle Orry until Malcolm came along!

Ex-22 employee - (08 July 2005)
The theme song from Clubhouse 22 when it was Joe Smith: Stop whatever your doin' today...Joe and Duff are on their way...gonna have fun for you on Clubhouse 22, and we've got the loveable Creep, who's really neat....and what's more in store we've got, Pick-a-Door...so when the hour's through for you, you'll be glad that you, spend an moment or two...Joe and Duff on Clubhouse 22, Joe and Duff on Clubhouse 22, Joe and Duff on Clubhouse 22....and now, here's Joe!! I have a copy of this on reel to reel as well. By the way, it is my voice. I went to Mike Jone's studio and recorded it! I remember his studio was in a garage. Talk about a long time ago in a tv land far far away!

Chuck - (13 July 2005)
Thanks for the memories.

Jim W. - (20 July 2005)
All this brings back memories! I lived in West Carrollton during the early 70's. I remember Clubhouse 22 with Malcolm. I remember when they first ordered the robot. They thought they were getting a row-boat. I also remember Pick-A-Door. 1-2-3-4, time for us to Pick-A-Door. What's in store behind the Pick-A-Door? I also remember Skipper Ryle on some channel (19?) out of Cincinnati. I think that channel used to come in really fuzzy in my neck of the woods, but it used to have cool stuff like Big Time Wrestling and Outer Limits & stuff. Well before cable TV. Man, the above messages about Burger Chef and Red Barn really do bring back memories!

Growing up in Dayton, the forum brings back hella memories. The only way my mom could get me to nap was by telling me if I didn't, I couldn't watch Clubhouse 22. I remember one Children's Day Parade, the Clubhouse 22 gang was in it & Joe Smith waved at me. I started bawling my eyes out I was so excited. On a side note, the second year that 103.9 had their Halloween party at the Asylum, Dr. Creep was there. I told him how I grew up watching him on Clubhouse 22 & Shock Theatre...he then proceeded to try to hit on me.

I also stalked Gil Whitney in Stumps (now Petco) when I was 8. He was grocery shopping & I was SO intrigues that he was shopping in MY grocery store that I proceeded to follow him up & down the ailses until my mom found me. She was really embarrased and had to apologize for her "star struck" daughter, but he was very gracious about it.

Clubhouse 22 & Speed Racer - my two favorite shows in Dayton, late 1960's. If I remeber correctly they used to show short cartoons during Clubhouse 22 like "Snuffy Smith".......... I remember one Easter the crew from Ch.22 was throwing an Easter Egg hunt at a downtown park - I think Duffy The Dog was going to be there. My dad tookmy sister & I 20 minutes early but it was all over! They couldn't keep the hordes of kids who showed up to wait. I was SO disappointed......... I'ts been a long time since I've been in the Dayton area. Does anyone else remeber "BHA means better home appliances, better home appliances, better home appliance. BHA means better home appliances, Hoo-ray for BHA!" Play that tune upside down & get free piano lessons. (Though why you would need lessons if you could play upside-down I'll never know.)........ How 'bout Esther Price Chocolates. YUM!

mlw - (08 August 2005)

This page made my day! I'm lived in West Carrollton in the 60s/70s and wondered whatever happened to Malcolm when I came across this page. It brought back a lot of great memories. I didn't think anyone remembered suicide hill or witches tower let alone Malcolm and Clubhouse 22.

Nick C. - (20 August 2005)
I grew up in Bellrook, Ohio during the 60's/70's. Clubhouse 22 after school, & Shock Theatre at 11:30 pm on Friday nights provided some great childhood memories. Didn't get the "campiness" of Shock Theater in 1972 ( at age 12), actually thought it was scary. I remember running out of my house and looking to the sky on 04/03/1974 and seeing a funnel cloud go over my house, as Gil Whitney reported on channel 7 that a tornado was near Bellbrook. It of course went on to Xenia, a sad day. Here are some happier memories, off the top of my head. The Echo, The Mouse That Roared, The Lions Den, Bargain Barn, Stop-N-Go, Obadiahs, Todd Burlesk (for the guys), Captain Kidd, Belmont Drive In, Stengers Ford, Skyborn, Sugarcreek Ski Hills, WTUE-FM Top 40, Wing AM Top 40, Hara Arena Rock Concerts. This is a terrific site for those of us who grew up in the Dayton area during this time period. Keep adding those memories!

John C - (16 September 2005)
Okay guys-here's another round of Dayton nostalgia starting with some stuff the Creeper himself will remember: Christmas Eve, 1977 I remember seeing Dr. Creep's Mobile Mortuary (an old 60's Cadillac Hearse) in front of Children's Palace in Centerville. The good Doctor was in doing his Christmas Shopping for Project Smiles and needed all that extra "cargo" room. Hey Rick-whatever happened to the Mobile Mortuary? What about Dr. Creep's annual Dungeons and Dragons tournaments at the Tin Soldier and Hobbies International circa 1982-3? And some other area memories for you fellow boomers-Crosley Field and the "Big Red Machine", 3.2% "near beer", Boone's Farm, The Cool Ghoul (Cincinnati's answer to our beloved Creeper), Rose/Bench Lincoln Mercury, The original Dayton Mall, Woody's Little Farm, Wamplers, Reeds Drugstore in WC, Skipper Ryle and Captain Wendy, Obiyoyo, B.B. Kong, King's Island, LeSourdsville Lake, Dixie Electric Company, Elder Beermans, The Air Force Museum (still one of my favorites), Don Wayne, Omar Williams, George Mitchell (sorry Creeper). Stay tuned for part three as I try to think of more...the old brain just doesn't work as fast these days.

ex-22 employee - (21 September 2005)
What about the She night club's "drink and drown" night? George Mitchell? Yikes! Drive over to the Lexus dealership and ask the owner about his past days at 22. (John Higgins) He used to work there too.

I could go on and on, but will keep those memories to myself.

Good to see ya on the telethon Creep...but it just isn't the same anymore is it?

John C - (23 September 2005)
I spent many a Wednesday at the She "Drink 'n Drown". Wow-does that bring back memories. I actually even thought I could dance back then. Is the John Higgins at the Lexus dealership the same John Higgins that used to race Porsches for the Foreign Exchange by the old Hills and Dales shopping center? Anybody remeber when the late Gil Whitney at channel 7 used to help produce the Dayton Air Show? That was back when the show really menat something to the aviation community. How about Angelo's drive-in across from the GM plant in Moraine? The slogan on their sign (that remained in place for about twenty years after they closed shop) used to be "Chickie in a Quickie". I can remember when Town and Country shopping center in Kettering used to have one the very last Kresge stores and it even had a lunch counter(!). Ahh-those were the days.

melissa - (30 September 2005)
I was born in 73 ,but I too have fond memories of Clubhouse 22.I lived in Moraine,Ohio all of my live.Somehow my mom won tickets to it so my brother, sister, myself and a friend went to see it live.my brother & sister went on stage to play a game with other kids.I loved coming home from school and watching Clubhouse 22.I would run to my house so that I wouldn't miss any of it.I should would like to see some old videos of it.It is so cool to Dr.Creep on the air again, but I miss the others.

Rick - (04 October 2005)
As to WAVI hosts - AJ Austin is now in Connect. editing a wood working magazine and writing SF. Mike Scinto is on WDAO 1210 AM from noon to 2 PM. I don't know where Dr John and the other hosts are. Dave Harris who did the news is a computer tech in Dayton.

Hope this helps on locating some WAVE radio people.

rhonda aitken - (05 October 2005)
I have many memories of Dayton in the early 70"s. I truly enjoyed working with Barry at the very beginning of Shock Theatre.

The "LIVE" show. The many personal appearances. The time I was sat on fire at the high school personal appearance.

Remember when Malcolm did the albumn with Trudy and the Hopple Street exit band. That was a concert !!

Thanks for the memories. Would love to have some pictures or other memorabilia from that time. Rhonda AKA Terra

mark watson - (22 October 2005)
I remember the free concerts at Island park in the early 70's.. I remember Dale Walton singin findin my way back home, and he had a cordless guitar, i thought it was soo cool when he ran around the seats jammin.. I also remember community park in Huber in the early 70's, it was the place to party, but then the cash money thing took over,,,, as a child I remember in the summer time you would see sky writers a lot, and bargan barn was the big cheap store in town, and Rikes was a Christmas event.. I was on the Uncle Orie show, but he was sick so it was Ferdie fugbudgitt and yoga the bear, Golden Rod on Main street, hippies at couthouse in downtown dayton in the 60's protesting the war(i was a kid, born in 1959), and asking my dad about them, he just said those are people who don't like war, i thought, cool, i wanna be a hippie, too, and besides the blonde girl who handed me a copy of the rasberry radical was cute !!\who remembers the rassberry radical? it was a local underground newspaper.. i also remember buying fabulas freak bros comics, think i got em at golden rod,\i got em all on cd's if anyone wants em e mail me at daytonbuzzman2000@yahoo.com whiskey makes me ramble, sorry if i got boring.. I saw dr creep last night at Brownies in Huber, one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet.. in the 70's me and some hooligans found out he lived in these apartments in huber, so we would get stoned and shoot at his front door with bottle rockets!! God, he got pissed !! He would run out of that place (no make up) cussin and threatenin to kick our asses, we responded by a volley of bottle rockets... one night he had enough and jumped in his hearse and chased us, we was in a van, and we opened up the back doors and let him have it with the dollar a piece bottle rockets...he retreated,,i think after he chasrd us we left him alone.. But i saw him last night at brownies, and asked him about it, and, i'll be damned he remembered, I told him i was just a kid and was sorry for messin with him. he said it was cool..i was so surprised he remembered, we musta tormented that guy !! well, he forgave me, and him and his ghouls had to go and as they left, i got an empty bud bottle, and got a direct hit on the creep with a 10 dollar bottle rocket (things cost more now) well, i was lying about the last part but it was good to see Barry is still with us, he is one of the nicest guys there is...here is a link to pics http://www.flickr.com/photos/83517133@N00/?saved=1 this post rocks, add more dredge up them memories and share!!

Steve Phelps - (01 November 2005)
The female host w/Joe Smith on 22 Skiddoo, would that be Jo Corey? Anyway remember Tchiffiz Place head shop in Kettering, or ever hang out at Indian Riffle Park in those days? I went to Charlie Goodtime with the cub scouts one year, and I was behind him as he straddled his mic cable while talking to the camera. I began pulling and jerking his cable through his legs from behind while he was on the air talking. My den parents weren't very happy about it and I had to sit off the set for the rest of the show.

MAXZDAD - (04 November 2005)
858 SOUTH PATTERSON BLVD!!!!

John C - (04 November 2005)
Emmert Royer-"BHA means better home appliances, yada, yada, yada". Right Toby? Arf! Actually, I think the proper response after "858 South Patterson Blvd" is "Oh Yeah!"

Patrick - (16 November 2005)
The record store by the Art Theatre was Forest Records I think. Before it was a record store the Lemon Tree was the coffeehouse there. The building was razed. The downtown headshop was The Village Undergound, on St. Clair near East Third. They had a tiny but cool black light room in the back. It was where I personally discovered such cool newspapers as the East Village Other and the San Francisco Oracle.

Patrick - (16 November 2005)
Not St. Clair. Village Underground was on Jefferson Street.

Oh yes....Tchiffaz Place, Judy's Place....midnight movies at the Art Theater and at the Victoriawhich was always in a haze of smoke...and then as far as tv nostalgia, who can forget the late night star on the other channel(s)....Bob Shreve!!! Wanna see chickie a little longer???? : )

John C - (30 November 2005)

Doc Ely - (12 January 2006)
Remember the music-and-club scene back then? Ivan and the Sabers at the Kettering Roller Rink and Forest Park. The Mark (later Marque) V at the Diamond Club, with and without Sonny Flaharty (who is still alive, well and recording metaphysical Christian music in California). Rick and the Raiders before they became the McCoys and Rick Zehringer became Rick Derringer. The dangerous and somewhat disreputable X-Cellents at the LT Club; the even more dangerous and disreputable scene at Little Mickey's (my band, Lady Windemere's Operation, was one of the last to play the place before the bulldozers got it). And so on, and so on, and scooby doobie doobie...

Jeff - (04 November 2008)
Glad to see the old Web site is up and running well. I'm also glad to hear Dr. Creep is still appearing at Halloween. Thanks for the memories Dr. Creep!

Jeff - (20 November 2008)

I'm sorry to hear that Dr. Creep is in poor health. I hope he gets to feeling better soon!

Dan - (04 May 2010)
Hey Tony, I too am from east Dayton. Eastmont to be exact. I played in bands at local record hops and clubs from the 50's to the 80's. I live in Arizona now, but miss my old stomping grounds
